Grade words mean different things to different sellers, so every Ragtrail contract writes the definition down. These are ours.
Cream / Premium
Condition. Clean, wearable, close to new. No stains, holes, pilling or fading that a buyer would notice. Current styles and recognised brands where the category allows.
Target market. Resale-ready stock for secondhand retailers, vintage and online resellers, and premium export markets that pay for condition.
Low tolerance for faults; any rejects found on opening are claimable against the spec.
All Grade A balesStandard Commercial
Condition. Wearable with light, visible wear: minor fading, light pilling, a missing button. Mixed styles and brands.
Target market. The volume grade for wholesale markets in Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe, and for market traders selling by the piece.
Moderate tolerance for wear; no wet, mouldy or contaminated items.
All Grade B balesUtility / Low Grade
Condition. Worn, faded, stained or damaged but still usable: as utility wear, for re-making, or cut into wipers.
Target market. Low-price markets, workwear and utility resale, wiping-rag cutters and fibre recyclers.
Priced to its use; anything non-rewearable is routed to recycling streams.
All Grade C balesCollected stock (credential: as it comes out of banks and shops) is opened and separated into broad streams: clothing, shoes, bags and accessories, household textiles, and non-textile contamination removed.
Each stream is graded on condition, style and brand into Grade A (cream / premium), Grade B (standard commercial) and Grade C (utility / low grade). Grade definitions are written into every Ragtrail contract, because the words alone mean different things to different sellers.
Graded stock is sorted again by category (garment type, gender, age), by season (summer, winter, mixed) and by fabric, so a buyer can order exactly what their market sells: for example Grade A men's winter jackets, or Grade B children's summer mix.
Items that cannot be worn again are not mixed into wearable bales. Cotton-rich textiles are cut into wiping rags; the rest goes to fibre recycling (shoddy, insulation, felt). Footwear that cannot be paired or repaired is processed separately.
